Gorgeous Gangtok, literally means the “High Hill”, is a charming hill station perched on a ridge at an altitude of 5,500 ft. Directorate of Handicraft and Handloom - Instituted with the aim of promoting and keeping alive the state’s traditional arts and crafts, the directorate of handicrafts & handloom is a storehouse of hand-woven carpets with traditional motifs, blankets, shawls in Lepcha weaves and exquisitely imprinted ’Choktse’ or table and many other gift items. Flower Show –

Rare Orchids are collectively reared to be exhibited in flower show throughout the year. Orchid shows held during the tourist season is one of the most admired shows organized in the state.

Tashi View Point -

Situated along the North Sikkim highway it is only 8 kilometers from Gangtok. From this point you get a breathtaking view of Mount Khanchendzonga and Mt. Siniolchu, one of the most graceful peaks in the world.

Ganesh Tok –

It is a very small temple of Ganesh, a God worshipped by Hindus situated on a ridge and is only 7 kilometers from Gangtok. From this spot one gets birds eye view of sprawling Gangtok town down below while across the hills Mt. Khanchendzonga and Mt. Siniolchu loom over the horizon. A cafeteria serves you hot tea / coffee and snacks. A Sikkim Government nursery is just nearby.

Hanuman Tok -

Higher up, and 11 kilometers from the town, this is yet another view point for a majestic gaze into the valley below and the horizon ahead. A Hindu temple where the devotees offer prayers. Besides offering prayers, one can enjoy the scenic beauty of Gangtok town and have a satisfying glimpse of snow clad. Mt Khanchendzonga.

Do - Drul Chorten -

The Do - Drul Chorten or Stupa was built by Truslshi Rimpoche, head of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism. Inside this Stupa, there are complete Mandala sets of Dorjee Phurba around this Chorten, which is one of the most important Stupas in Sikkim, are 108 Mani - lhakor (prayer wheels). These prayer wheels are turned by the devout Buddhist while chanting “hail to the jewel in the lotus”, to invoke Bodhisattvas. Truslshi Rimpoche built it in 1945 to ward off foreign invasion.

Namgyal Research Institute of Tibetology -

The most prestigious of its kind in India - this Buddhist Institute is a treasure trove of vast collection of rare Lepcha, Tibetan and Sanskrit manuscripts, statues and rare Thankas and has over 200 Buddhist icons. Today, it is the renowned worldwide center for study of Buddhist philosophy and religion.

Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre (Rumtek Monastery)–

About 45 minutes drive (24 kms) from Gangtok, is the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Center, the seat of the Kagyu order, one of the four major Tibetan Buddhist sects. Traditional in design, it is almost replica of the original Kagyurpa Monastery in Tsurphu, Tibet. The centre has a collection of some of the most unique religious art objects. The seat of the 17th Gyalwa Karma, late His Holiness Rangjung Rigpae Dorjee, it was built in 1960. Botanical Garden and Shanti View Point – These are the two places which tourist visits during the local sight seeing. Rare orchids, flowering plants and medicinal plants are grows here. Botanical Ipecac this garden is located at a distance of about 14 kilometers downhill from Gangtok. The garden has been named after the medicinal plant Ipecac which is grown here. Besides this plant, this garden also contains a wide variety of other flora including numerous types of orchids and medicinal plants. A large green house also accommodates many other species.

Ranka Monastery:

One of the biggest & beautiful monasteries in Sikkim.

Banjhakri Waterfalls:

A garden & waterfalls with some exhibitions of ancient Sikkimese rural culture, an excellent place to spend few hours for tourists. Kanchendzongha Tourism Park (Ranka): Its beautiful artificial amusement park with variety of joyrides, cafeteria, different Sikkimese cultural show, light and sound show in evening. This is also an attractive place for tourist as well as local people and specially for children.

Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula pass (one full day sight seeing)

is a must for all tourists. About 57 kilometers away from Gangtok, this serene lake is situated at an elevation of 3600 meters (12400 feet) on the Gangtok Nathu La highway. The lake is considered sacred by the local people. It is also a home of brahminy ducks. It’s cool, placid water along with the scenic beauty is worth watching. A small temple of lord Siva is constructed on the lakeside. This placid lake remains frozen during the winter months up to mid-April. Nathula pass is the historical pass on the Indo – China Border, on the Tibetian plateau lies at an altitude of 14,200 ft. and is one of highest motorable roads in the country. These places are in the restricted area and hence an inner line permit is required by Indians to visit this place. Foreign nationals are permitted to visit this lake only (not beyond that) with special permission, our travel desk will take care of all these formalities.
